What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students select precise vocabulary for different audiences and situations. They adjust word choice and level of formality when speaking or writing about academic, workplace, and technical topics.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students choose words that fit the subject, audience, purpose, and setting. They replace vague wording with accurate terms and can shift between conversational, academic, technical, and professional language.

Common Misconceptions

Students may use long or technical words simply to sound formal, even when those words are inaccurate. They may also use the same tone for classmates, teachers, employers, and public audiences.

How to Assess It

Give students a vague project update and ask them to rewrite it as an email to an employer. Require three precise professional or technical terms and a brief reason for one choice.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Sort vocabulary cards into general, academic, technical, and professional groups, then revise one vague sentence using a word from each group.

  2. Write the same project update for a friend, a teacher, and a workplace supervisor, then explain each vocabulary choice.

  3. Play a precision challenge where teams replace vague words in sample sentences and earn points for accurate, audience-appropriate choices.

  4. Rewrite a real job posting or college email in plain language, then restore the specialized terms needed for its intended audience.
