What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose words that fit their purpose, audience, and setting. They use subject-specific terms accurately and shift between casual, academic, and professional language when needed.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can explain one concept to a classmate, teacher, or workplace supervisor using fitting vocabulary. The student replaces vague words with accurate terms and uses specialized language correctly.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think longer words always sound more precise. They may misuse technical terms or use a casual tone in formal settings. Some choose impressive words without checking meaning or context.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Explain why a source is credible in two sentences, one for a class discussion and one for an email to a principal. Underline words changed for the audience.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Sort vocabulary cards into casual, academic, technical, and professional groups, then use one word from each group in a matching sentence.

  2. Discuss: How would your word choices change when explaining climate data to a friend, a science teacher, and a city council?

  3. Play Vocabulary Swap: Teams replace vague words in sample sentences, earning a point only when the revision is accurate and audience appropriate.

  4. Read a job posting, highlight field-specific terms, then draft a three-sentence email that uses two of those terms naturally.
