What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose precise vocabulary that fits their topic, purpose, audience, and setting. They use academic and specialized terms accurately without making their communication confusing or unnatural.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students replace vague words with accurate general, academic, or field-specific terms. They adjust formality for an essay, email, presentation, or conversation while keeping the meaning clear.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think longer or less familiar words always sound better. They may misuse thesaurus choices, confuse technical terms with academic words, or use formal language in every setting.

How to Assess It

Give students a vague two-sentence message. Ask them to revise it for a teacher, then for a friend, and underline three purposeful word choices.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups word cards to sort into general, academic, technical, and professional vocabulary, then defend two choices.

  2. Ask students to rewrite one school announcement for ninth graders, parents, and administrators, then explain how their vocabulary changed.

  3. Play Vocabulary Upgrade, where teams replace vague words in sentences with precise choices and earn points for accuracy and fit.

  4. Have students compare wording in a job posting, instruction manual, news article, and text message, then revise one example for another audience.
