What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose words that fit the topic, audience, purpose, and setting. They use precise general, academic, and subject-specific terms in speaking and writing, then revise vague wording.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can replace vague words such as “thing,” “good,” or “changed” with accurate terms. The student adjusts word choice for a class discussion, formal essay, lab report, or other setting.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose long or unfamiliar words because they sound impressive, even when simpler words are more accurate. They may also use subject-specific terms incorrectly or use casual language in formal work.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Rewrite “The scientist did something to the liquid and it changed” for a lab report, using at least three precise terms. Underline each term and explain one choice.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Sort word cards into everyday, academic, and subject-specific groups, then revise one vague paragraph using a word from each group.

  2. Compare two versions of a message, one casual and one formal, then explain which word choices fit each audience.

  3. Play Precision Relay, where teams replace vague words in sentences with accurate academic or subject-specific terms.

  4. Rewrite a school club announcement for students, parents, and the principal, changing vocabulary to suit each audience.
