What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students replace vague or casual wording with exact terms that fit the subject, audience, and purpose. They use new vocabulary correctly in speaking and writing.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students use exact words such as analyze, increase, or denominator correctly. They adjust word choice for a class discussion, formal paragraph, lab report, or email and can explain their choices.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think the longest or most formal word is always best. They may choose a thesaurus synonym without checking its meaning or tone. Some use subject terms in the wrong context or rely on vague words like stuff, good, and bad.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Rewrite “The liquid got hot fast” for a science report using two precise terms, then underline the terms.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups cards such as get, obtain, absorb, and photosynthesize, then have them sort the words by setting and justify each placement.

  2. Compare “The character is mad” with “The protagonist is resentful”; write when each version would fit and explain why.

  3. Play Precision Relay: teams replace vague words in short sentences, earning a point when the new word fits the context exactly.

  4. Rewrite a text message as an email to a principal, then circle the vocabulary changes made for the new audience.
