What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students determine word meanings by using context, word parts, dictionaries, and other sources. They track how words work in everyday, academic, and subject-specific settings. They apply new vocabulary when explaining texts, speaking, and writing.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can explain an unfamiliar word and show how context, word parts, or a reference source helped. They use new academic and subject-specific words accurately in speaking and writing. They notice when a word changes meaning across contexts.

Common Misconceptions

Students may guess from one nearby word instead of checking the whole passage. They may assume a word has the same meaning in every subject. Some copy a dictionary definition that does not fit the sentence.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: In the sentence, “Planting trees can mitigate heat by lowering surface temperatures,” define mitigate and name the clue you used. Then use mitigate in a new sentence about a different topic.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs word cards from a recipe, science article, and school notice; students sort them, mark context clues, and compare meanings.

  2. Ask students to explain when “factor” means a number, a cause, or an influence, then write one sentence for each meaning.

  3. Play Vocabulary Detective: teams earn points by defining a mystery word from context, roots, or a dictionary entry and defending their method.

  4. Have students collect three unfamiliar words from menus, apps, signs, or instructions, then create a mini glossary with meanings and source sentences.
