What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students notice unfamiliar and useful words in stories, articles, videos, and subject-area texts. They use context and reference tools to determine meanings, then record and use the words accurately.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can identify useful new words, explain their meanings in context, and sort them as everyday, academic, or subject-specific. The student uses these words accurately when speaking or writing about a text or topic.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think every unfamiliar word deserves equal attention or that copying a dictionary definition proves understanding. They may also confuse everyday meanings with subject-specific meanings, such as volume in math versus volume in sound.

How to Assess It

Give students a short paragraph with one unfamiliar academic word and one subject-specific word. Ask them to infer each meaning, underline the clue, and use one word accurately in a new sentence.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs word cards from a science article to sort into everyday, academic, and subject-specific groups, then match each word to context clues.

  2. After reading a short article, ask students to explain which three words matter most and defend each choice with evidence.

  3. Play Vocabulary Relay: teams draw a word, define it, use it in context, and name a related word for four points.

  4. Have students collect five unfamiliar words from menus, apps, signs, or sports reports, then annotate meanings and where each appears.
