What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students learn useful words from grade-level print, digital, and visual texts. They determine meanings, track how words are used, and apply them in speaking and writing.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students explain unfamiliar words using context, word parts, and reference tools. They use newly learned general, academic, and subject-specific words accurately in discussion and writing.

Common Misconceptions

Students may copy a dictionary definition without understanding how the word works in the text. They may rely on one context clue or confuse an everyday meaning with a subject-specific meaning.

How to Assess It

Give students a short paragraph with one bold academic word. Ask them to define it in context, cite one clue, and use it in a new sentence.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs word, definition, example, and image cards from a class text, then have them match and explain each set.

  2. Ask students to choose one new word from a text and explain why the author used it instead of a familiar synonym.

  3. Play vocabulary charades with current academic and subject-specific words, requiring the guessing team to use each answer in a complete sentence.

  4. Compare how words like cell, volume, or function are used in science, math, music, and everyday conversation.
