Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students learn useful words from grade-level print, digital, and multimedia sources. They determine meanings, track how words are used, and apply them in discussion and writing.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students infer word meanings from context, word parts, references, and text features. They use new words accurately when speaking and writing about grade-level texts and content.
Common Misconceptions: Students may copy dictionary definitions without understanding how a word works in the text. They may also confuse familiar everyday meanings with academic or subject-specific meanings.
How to Assess It: Give students three words from a current class text. Ask them to define each in context and write a new sentence that keeps the same meaning.

Lesson moves

Give pairs word cards from a class text to sort into general, academic, and subject-specific groups, then justify each choice.
Ask students to explain how one new word sharpens the meaning of a sentence from the current text.
Play Vocabulary Taboo using current terms, with students describing each word without using its definition or listed clues.
Have students collect five unfamiliar words from a news article, then create a glossary with contextual definitions and original examples.
