What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students notice unfamiliar or specialized words while reading, viewing, or listening to grade-level material. They use context, word parts, and reference tools to determine meaning. They add useful words to their speaking and writing.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students determine a new word’s meaning from context, word parts, and reliable references. They explain how a term works within a specific field or profession. They use newly learned words accurately in speaking and writing.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat a guessed meaning as final without checking it against the full passage. They may confuse related terms or ignore how meaning changes across fields. They may know a definition but use the word in the wrong tone or context.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short article with three unfamiliar terms highlighted. Ask them to infer each meaning, cite a context clue, verify it with a source, and write one accurate sentence.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs vocabulary cards from a news article, lab report, and job posting, then have them sort words by context and explain each choice.
Ask students to compare one shared term, such as theory or equity, across two fields and write how its meaning or use changes.
Play Context Clue Relay using short passages, with teams identifying meanings, marking evidence, and checking answers in a dictionary.
Have students annotate a job posting, define five professional terms, and rewrite one requirement in clear language for a younger student.
