What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students learn words from grade-level print, digital, and multimedia texts. They determine meanings, distinguish everyday words from academic and specialized terms, and use the words accurately in context.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students infer and confirm meanings using context, word parts, glossaries, or reliable digital sources. They use new academic and specialized terms accurately when speaking and writing about grade-level texts.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may rely only on dictionary definitions and ignore how context changes meaning. They may confuse academic words with subject-specific terms or use technical vocabulary in the wrong setting.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short grade-level passage with three highlighted terms. Ask them to define each term from context, label its type, and use it accurately in a new sentence.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups printed text excerpts to sort highlighted words into general, academic, disciplinary, technical, and professional vocabulary.
Ask students to explain which vocabulary from a class text would confuse a younger reader and write clear, context-based definitions.
Play vocabulary charades with subject-specific terms, requiring each team to name the term, define it, and use it in context.
Have students examine a job posting and identify professional or technical terms they would need to understand before applying.
