What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use context, word parts, reference tools, and background knowledge to work out unfamiliar words. They collect and apply useful words from class texts, media, and subject areas.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students accurately explain unfamiliar words using context, word parts, and reference tools. They use new academic and specialized terms correctly when speaking or writing about a text.

Common Misconceptions

Students may copy a dictionary definition without understanding how the word works in the text. They may also treat context clues as guesses or assume specialized words have the same meaning in every subject.

How to Assess It

Give students a short paragraph containing the word “mitigate.” Ask them to infer its meaning, cite one context clue, and use it in a new sentence.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs vocabulary cards from a science article to sort into general, academic, technical, and professional word groups.

  2. Ask students to explain which three words from a class text would help an absent student understand the topic and why.

  3. Play vocabulary Taboo using current class terms, with students defining each word without using its root or listed related words.

  4. Have students examine a job posting, identify five professional terms, infer each meaning, and rewrite the requirements in plain language.
