What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students learn unfamiliar words from grade-level print, digital, and visual texts. They use context, word parts, dictionaries, and glossaries to understand and apply academic and specialized vocabulary.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students infer a word’s meaning, verify it with a reliable source, and explain which clues helped. They use new academic and specialized terms accurately in speaking and writing.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose the first dictionary definition without checking how the word is used. They may also treat everyday and subject-specific meanings as identical or memorize terms without using them.

How to Assess It

Give students a short paragraph with one bold word. Ask them to define it, underline two clues, and use it correctly in a new sentence.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups word, definition, context, and image cards from a class text, then have them match each complete set.

  2. After reading an article, ask students to choose one unfamiliar term and explain how its meaning changes across two sentences.

  3. Play Vocabulary Detective by awarding points for finding context clues, useful word parts, and accurate definitions in short passages.

  4. Compare vocabulary from a job posting and a workplace email, then rewrite five terms for a general audience.
