What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students gather information from books and websites, then judge whether each source is trustworthy and useful for their question. They combine facts from multiple sources, paraphrase the information, and give credit.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students choose sources that are trustworthy and connected to the research question. They combine relevant facts, write them in their own words, and name where each fact came from.

Common Misconceptions

Students may assume the first search result or any site ending in .org is trustworthy. They may copy sentences, change a few words, or omit the source name.

How to Assess It

Give students one book excerpt and one website excerpt. Ask them to answer a question using a paraphrased fact from each, name both sources, and identify the more credible source.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups printed source cards to sort into credible, questionable, relevant, and irrelevant piles, then require one reason for each choice.

  2. Show two short sources on the same animal and ask, Which would you trust more, and what details support your choice?

  3. Play Source Detective by awarding points for spotting authors, dates, evidence, copied wording, and facts unrelated to the research question.

  4. Have students compare two online weather reports, choose the better source for planning recess, and explain their choice with specific evidence.
