What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students find exact words or sections in a text that back up an answer, idea, or opinion. They explain how the chosen evidence supports their thinking.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student gives a clear answer or opinion, then selects an exact line or section that supports it. The student can explain how that evidence connects to the response.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often choose a sentence about the topic that does not actually prove their point. They may copy a large section instead of selecting the strongest line, or give an opinion without text evidence.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short passage and ask, “Did the character make a wise choice?” Have them answer and copy one sentence that best supports their response.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a printed article and sticky notes; they mark two lines supporting a teacher-provided claim and explain each choice.
Ask, “Was the main character fair?” Students write a response, include one quotation, and explain how it supports their view.
Play Evidence Match by having students pair claim cards with quotation cards, then defend each match to a partner.
Compare two product reviews and highlight details that support each reviewer’s rating, then decide which review is more convincing.
