What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students answer questions or share ideas about a text. They point to a specific word, sentence, detail, or picture that supports what they say.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student answers a question or states an opinion, then points to a matching sentence, detail, or illustration. The student explains how that part supports the response.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may give an answer based only on their own experience. They may point to any page instead of choosing words or pictures that clearly support the answer.
How to Assess It
- After a short read-aloud, ask, “Why did Maya take her umbrella?” Have students name or point to the page that supports their answer.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sticky notes to mark the page in a picture book that shows why a character made a choice.
Ask, “Was the character helpful?” Students state an opinion and name one story detail that supports it.
Play Evidence Match by having students pair answer cards with sentence or picture cards from a familiar text.
Read a classroom sign or lunch menu, then ask students to point out the part that answers a practical question.
