What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students answer questions, share ideas, or give opinions about a text. They point to a specific sentence, detail, heading, or illustration that supports their thinking.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students answer a question or state an opinion, then identify the exact sentence, detail, or illustration that supports it. They can explain how that part connects to their thinking.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may give an answer from memory without showing where the text supports it. They may point to an entire page instead of a specific sentence, detail, heading, or picture. Some choose an interesting detail that does not support their idea.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short passage and ask, “Why did the character hide the box?” Have them answer and underline one sentence that supports their answer.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sticky notes to mark one sentence and one picture detail that support an answer about a short read-aloud.
Ask, “Was the character’s choice fair?” and have students write an opinion followed by one supporting detail from the story.
Play Evidence Match by giving teams answer cards and text-detail cards to pair, then asking them to explain each match.
Read two playground rule posters and ask students to point to details that explain how each rule keeps children safe.
