What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students gather information from several print and online sources for one focused question. They judge whether each source is trustworthy and useful. They combine evidence in their own words and give credit through citations.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can select useful sources and explain how author expertise, publication date, evidence, and purpose affect trustworthiness. The student can combine details from multiple sources through accurate paraphrasing, quotation, and citation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume the first search result or a polished website is trustworthy. They may choose sources that mention the topic but do not answer the question. Copying sentences, changing a few words, or omitting citations are common plagiarism errors.
How to Assess It
- Give students three short source cards and one research question. Ask them to select two sources, justify each choice, and write a two-sentence synthesis with citations.

Ways to Teach It
Set out four printed source cards; students sort them into trustworthy, questionable, and irrelevant piles, then label the evidence behind each choice.
Students respond to “Which source deserves your trust most, and why?” using the author, date, evidence, and purpose in their reasoning.
Play Source Showdown: pairs compare two websites, award points for authority, evidence, currency, and relevance, then defend the winner.
Have students investigate a school lunch claim using the menu, nutrition data, and a health website, then write a cited recommendation.
