What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use quotations and paraphrases while clearly marking which ideas came from a source. They format in-text citations consistently and create matching entries on a works cited page.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students introduce, quote or paraphrase, and explain source material without confusing it with their own ideas. Each borrowed detail has an accurate in-text citation that matches a complete works cited entry.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add a citation only after a direct quote, not after a paraphrase. They may use a URL as the entire works cited entry or include sources that never appear in the writing. They may also drop quotes into paragraphs without introducing or explaining them.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short source and ask them to write two sentences using one quoted or paraphrased detail. Require an in-text citation and a matching works cited entry.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs source cards, in-text citation cards, and works cited cards, then have them build and check matching sets.
Ask students to revise a paragraph containing an unsupported claim, adding one introduced quotation, a citation, and an explanation.
Run a citation error hunt using four sample paragraphs with missing citations, mismatched entries, dropped quotes, and incorrect punctuation.
Compare source credit in a news article with citation in an essay, then list what each method tells the reader.
