What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students answer questions that require reading between the lines and support their conclusions with quoted or paraphrased evidence. They cite each source in MLA or APA style and include a matching source entry.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students make a reasonable inference and support it with relevant quoted or paraphrased evidence. They use one citation style consistently, and every in-text citation matches an entry on the source list.

Common Misconceptions

Students may paste a URL instead of creating a full source entry. They may omit citations for paraphrases, mix MLA and APA rules, or list sources that do not match their in-text citations.

How to Assess It

Give students a short passage and its publication details. Ask them to write one supported inference, add an in-text citation, and create the matching source entry.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs source cards and citation cards to match, then have them correct capitalization, punctuation, dates, and author placement.

  2. Ask students to explain why a paraphrase still needs a citation and what could happen when a source entry is missing.

  3. Run a citation relay where teams convert source details into correct in-text citations and source entries using an MLA or APA guide.

  4. Have students cite evidence from a news article when writing a recommendation about a current school or community issue.
