What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students gather facts from books, articles, and trusted websites for a question or topic. They check whether sources are trustworthy and useful, then record facts in their own words and name each source.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can select useful facts from a book and a website, then explain why each source can be trusted. The student paraphrases the facts and names the source used.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think the first search result is always reliable or that any fact about the topic is relevant. They may copy sentences exactly, change only one word, or leave out the source title.

How to Assess It

Give students two short source cards about frogs. Ask them to choose the stronger source, explain one reason, paraphrase one relevant fact, and name the source.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set out printed source cards, and have pairs sort them into trustworthy, questionable, relevant, and off-topic piles with sticky-note reasons.

  2. Ask, "Which source would you trust for a report on bees, and why?" then require two clues from the source.

  3. Play Paraphrase Pass: teams rewrite one fact without copying more than two words, then add the source title.

  4. Plan a class pet guide by comparing a library book and veterinarian website, selecting three useful facts, and listing both sources.
