What Students Need to Do
- Students connect words and phrases by meaning, use, and degree. They use dictionaries, glossaries, thesauruses, and context to find or confirm the meaning that fits a specific situation.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students select an appropriate resource, such as a dictionary, glossary, or thesaurus, and locate useful information. They choose the meaning that fits the context and explain connections among related words and phrases.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose the first dictionary definition without checking whether it fits the sentence. They may also confuse related words, synonyms, and phrases with exact matches in meaning.
How to Assess It
- Give students a sentence containing the word “bright” and two dictionary definitions. Ask them to select the fitting definition and explain their choice using a clue from the sentence.
