What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students group and link words by meaning, including categories, opposites, and familiar associations. They use pictures, sentence clues, and simple references to check an unfamiliar word.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can name a word related to a given word and explain the connection. The student can use a picture dictionary or word wall to choose a meaning that fits a sentence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may match words because they rhyme or begin alike, even when their meanings do not connect. They may guess from a picture alone without checking the sentence or a reference.
How to Assess It
- Give students a picture dictionary and read, “The enormous elephant could not fit through the gate.” Ask them to find enormous, circle large or small, and name a related word.

Ways to Teach It
Have students sort picture cards into food, animals, and clothing, then explain why each card belongs in its group.
Read, “Mia wore a scarf because the air was chilly,” then ask partners what chilly means and which words helped.
Play Word Link: one student draws a card, says a related word, and explains the connection before passing the turn.
Use the lunch menu to find an unfamiliar food word, check a picture dictionary, and draw what the word names.
