What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students connect words and phrases that have related meanings. They use sentence clues, pictures, glossaries, and beginner dictionaries to figure out or confirm what a word means.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students explain a word using clues from the sentence, pictures, or a simple reference tool. They can name a related word or phrase and explain the connection. They choose a meaning that fits the context.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose a meaning from the picture without checking the sentence. They may think related words, such as jump and hop, mean exactly the same thing. Some look for words by the first sound rather than alphabetically.
How to Assess It
- Give students a sentence with one unfamiliar word and a picture dictionary page. Ask, “What does the word mean here, and what helped you decide?”
