What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use nearby words, pictures, and surrounding sentences to figure out an unfamiliar word or phrase. They also decide which meaning fits when a word has more than one meaning.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students choose a meaning that makes sense in the passage. They point to a picture, nearby word, or surrounding sentence as evidence and recognize when the same word has different meanings.

Common Misconceptions

Students may guess from the unknown word’s first letter or choose the meaning they know best. They may use one sentence clue but ignore pictures or nearby sentences that change the meaning.

How to Assess It

Give students two sentences using “bat” with different meanings. Ask them to draw each meaning and underline the words that helped them decide.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Place object and picture cards around a short passage, then have students select the card matching an unknown word and explain their clue.

  2. Read a sentence with an unfamiliar word and ask, “What do you think it means, and which words helped you?”

  3. Play Context Match by pairing sentence cards containing words like “bank,” “bark,” and “ring” with the correct picture cards.

  4. Examine a lunch menu or classroom sign, circle an unfamiliar word, and use pictures and nearby words to explain its meaning.
