What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students figure out what an unfamiliar word or phrase means by studying the words and sentences around it. They also decide which meaning of a word fits a particular passage.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students select a meaning that fits the sentence and the larger passage. They point to a definition, example, restatement, or other nearby clue and explain how it supports their choice.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose a familiar meaning that does not fit the sentence. They may guess from one nearby word instead of using the whole passage. They may also mistake an example for the word’s definition.

How to Assess It

Give students a short paragraph with one bold word and three possible meanings. Ask them to choose the best meaning and underline two context clues that support it.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Place clue cards around an unknown word, then have pairs sort them as definitions, examples, restatements, or unrelated details.

  2. Ask students to explain which meaning of “bright” fits two different sentences and cite the words that guided each choice.

  3. Play Context Clue Detective, awarding points when teams identify a word’s meaning and name the clue type used.

  4. Examine unfamiliar words from a lunch menu, weather report, or school notice and use surrounding details to infer each meaning.
