What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students infer the meaning of unfamiliar words and phrases from nearby details. They use cause and effect, comparisons, and contrasts to choose the meaning that fits. For a word with several meanings, they select the right one and point to evidence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a grade-level passage, students state a reasonable meaning for a highlighted word before using a dictionary. They identify the exact clue, explain the relationship, and check that the meaning fits the whole sentence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose a familiar meaning even when it does not fit the sentence. They may treat any nearby word as proof, confuse cause with effect, or mistake a comparison for a definition.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: In “Unlike the flexible branch, the brittle twig snapped when Mia bent it,” define brittle and underline the comparison clue.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs context clue cards; students connect each unknown word to its cause, effect, comparison, or contrast clue and write a meaning.
Ask: “Which words helped you infer the meaning, and how would the meaning change if those clues disappeared?”
Play Context Clue Relay: teams read sentence strips, infer the highlighted word, name the clue type, and earn a point for evidence.
Use a weather report or product review, and have students infer two unfamiliar terms from stated effects or comparisons.
