What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students notice an unfamiliar word or phrase and use a picture dictionary or teacher-approved digital resource to find its meaning. They check that the meaning fits the sentence or situation.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given an unfamiliar word, students can find it in a picture dictionary or search for it in a teacher-approved digital resource. They can use the result to explain the word in their own words.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose the first picture they see without checking whether it fits the sentence. They may confuse finding how a word sounds with finding what it means.

How to Assess It

Give students the sentence, “The rabbit nibbled the carrot.” Ask them to find “nibbled” in a picture dictionary and complete, “Nibbled means ____.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs word cards and picture dictionaries; students find each word, mark the page with a sticky note, and match it to a picture.

  2. Read, “The puppy curled up on the rug,” then have students look up the phrase, draw it, and explain its meaning.

  3. Play Find and Match by having students locate words in a picture dictionary and place them beside matching picture cards.

  4. Show a simple weather forecast, identify “drizzle,” and use a digital picture glossary to decide which clothes would fit the weather.
