What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose a suitable print or digital reference to investigate unfamiliar or multiple-meaning words. They compare entries with sentence context, then explain and verify the intended meaning.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can locate a useful entry, identify the matching definition, and cite context clues that support it. The student can cross-check another source and revise an initial interpretation when evidence disagrees.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often choose the first definition listed without checking the sentence. They may trust a search snippet, ignore part of speech, or assume synonyms are interchangeable. Some use only one source even when its meaning does not fit.
How to Assess It
- Give students: “After the storm, the crew worked to clear the jam from the narrow channel.” Ask them to define “jam” using two resources and cite one supporting context clue.

Ways to Teach It
Place dictionaries, thesauruses, glossaries, and tablets at stations; students rotate, research one highlighted word, and record which source helped most.
Discuss: When sources list several meanings for “draft,” how do the surrounding words and part of speech help you choose?
Play Definition Match: teams pair context sentences with numbered dictionary definitions, then earn a point by explaining each match.
Have students inspect a school email or product label, choose one unfamiliar term, verify its meaning, and rewrite the sentence plainly.
