What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use print dictionaries, online references, search tools, style guides, and word processor features to investigate unfamiliar or ambiguous language. They choose the meaning that fits the sentence, then check it against another source or the surrounding context.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student selects a resource suited to the question, such as a dictionary for meaning or a style guide for usage. The student chooses the correct sense from context and confirms it with another source.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may copy the first definition shown without checking whether it fits the sentence. They often treat thesaurus synonyms as exact meanings or ignore part of speech. Some trust search snippets or spelling suggestions without confirming them in a reference source.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: For “The new policy may mitigate the problem,” use a dictionary and one other digital tool to define mitigate. Name both sources and explain which meaning fits the sentence.

Post the prompt “Name the source that best clarified the word and explain the evidence that made it trustworthy” for partner responses.
Play Resource Relay: teams receive context sentences and earn points for choosing the right tool, definition, and confirming source.
Have students check a confusing word from a school policy, job posting, or news article and explain its meaning to the class.
