What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students select reliable print or digital sources to resolve unfamiliar or ambiguous language. They check definitions against sentence context and confirm the best meaning with evidence from the source.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students choose a source that fits the question, such as a dictionary, style guide, or corpus. They compare meanings, use context, and explain why one meaning fits better than the others.

Common Misconceptions

Students may accept the first search result or dictionary definition without checking context. They may also confuse a synonym with an exact meaning or overlook technical and figurative uses.

How to Assess It

Give students the sentence, “The committee tabled the proposal,” and two conflicting definitions of tabled. Ask them to select the best meaning, name the source used, and cite one context clue.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set up source stations with dictionaries, style guides, and devices, then have groups verify the meaning of five ambiguous words in sample sentences.

  2. Ask students to explain when a dictionary, search engine, style guide, or word processor would give the most reliable answer.

  3. Run a source showdown where teams earn points by finding, confirming, and citing the best meaning for a word in context.

  4. Compare how the word equity is defined in finance, law, education, and social policy sources, then discuss why field matters.
