What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose a suitable dictionary, glossary, thesaurus, or search tool when a word is unfamiliar or has several meanings. They compare resource entries with sentence clues to select and verify the intended meaning.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can locate a word efficiently, review relevant entries, and choose the meaning that fits the sentence. The student names the resource used and explains which context clue confirms the choice.

Common Misconceptions

Students often accept the first definition listed without checking whether it fits the sentence. They may trust a search snippet, confuse a synonym with a definition, or ignore a word’s part of speech.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: In “Maya sat on the bank and watched the current carry leaves downstream,” define “bank” using one reference. Name the source and underline the context clues.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set up stations with a print dictionary, textbook glossary, tablet, and word processor; students use each tool to solve one vocabulary card.

  2. Ask: Which source gave the clearest meaning for “draft” in this sentence, and what evidence made you trust it?

  3. Play Definition Match: teams pair multiple-meaning words, sentence cards, and verified dictionary entries, then defend each match.

  4. Have students decode unfamiliar words from a school form or website, record the source used, and rewrite each sentence plainly.
