What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose an appropriate print or digital source to investigate unfamiliar or multiple-meaning words. They compare definitions with the sentence context, then confirm and explain the intended meaning.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a passage, students independently select a useful reference tool and find the relevant definition. They reject meanings that do not fit, identify context evidence, and name the source they used.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often choose the first dictionary definition without checking whether it fits the sentence. They may treat a search snippet or synonym as proof instead of checking a reliable source and the surrounding context.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Read, “The kayakers struggled against the strong current.” Use one print or digital source to define “current,” name the source, and explain why that meaning fits.

Ways to Teach It
Set out print dictionaries and devices, then have pairs investigate four highlighted words and record each selected definition and context clue.
Ask students to compare two dictionary entries for one word and write which definition fits a provided sentence and why.
Run a definition match race where teams use approved resources to pair multiple-meaning words with the correct sentences.
Give students a weather alert or job posting and have them verify three unfamiliar terms using reliable print or digital sources.
