What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use dictionaries, style guides, search tools, and word-processing features to investigate unfamiliar or multiple-meaning words and phrases. They choose the meaning that fits the context, then verify it with reliable evidence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students select an appropriate print or digital tool and find meanings that fit the word's context and part of speech. They compare results when needed and explain why one meaning fits better than others.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose the first dictionary definition without checking how the word is used in the sentence. They may trust search snippets, autocorrect, or AI results without comparing sources or checking part of speech.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short paragraph with one bold multiple-meaning word. Ask them to use two reference tools, select the correct meaning, and cite context evidence that supports it.

Ways to Teach It
Set up stations with dictionaries, thesauruses, style guides, and laptops, then have students verify the meaning of one word at each station.
Ask students to explain which source they trust most for an unfamiliar phrase and what evidence makes that source reliable.
Give teams context cards with multiple-meaning words, then award points for choosing and defending the correct dictionary entry.
Have students examine a job posting, verify three unfamiliar terms with digital tools, and rewrite each term in plain language.
