What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose a useful print or digital source when a word or phrase is unfamiliar or has several meanings. They compare definitions with context and verify which meaning fits.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students select dependable resources that fit the question. They identify the context-specific meaning, confirm it with another source when needed, and explain why other definitions do not fit.

Common Misconceptions

Students often choose the first definition listed without checking the sentence. They may trust a search snippet, confuse synonyms with definitions, or overlook usage notes and source quality.

How to Assess It

Give students this sentence: “The witness qualified her earlier statement.” Ask them to use two resources, identify the meaning of “qualified,” and cite context clues.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set up stations with a print dictionary, style guide, online dictionary, and word processor to investigate “sanction” in two different sentences.

  2. Compare two dictionary entries for “disinterested,” then write which meaning fits a provided editorial sentence and why.

  3. Play a source-match game by pairing word questions with the best tool, such as a dictionary, thesaurus, style guide, or corpus.

  4. Choose an unclear phrase from a job posting, verify its meaning with two sources, and rewrite it for a student audience.
