What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students connect words and phrases through synonyms, antonyms, categories, and shades of meaning. They use dictionaries, glossaries, and other reference tools to find or confirm meanings.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can explain how two words or phrases are related and sort them by meaning. They can choose a useful reference tool, find an entry, and select the meaning that fits the context.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose the first dictionary meaning without checking whether it fits the sentence. They may also think synonyms mean exactly the same thing or confuse synonyms with antonyms.
How to Assess It
- Give students the sentence, “The enormous dog filled the doorway.” Ask them to use a dictionary to define enormous, name a related word, and explain why it fits.
