What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose words and phrases that clearly express what they mean when speaking and writing. They use known vocabulary and word relationships to make more precise choices.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students replace general words with precise words that match their meaning. They use learned vocabulary naturally in a sentence and can explain why a word fits.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose a longer word because it sounds impressive, even when it does not fit. They may think synonyms always mean exactly the same thing. They may also use learned words correctly in drills but not in their own speaking or writing.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: “The dog went across the yard. Replace went with a word that shows exactly how the dog moved, then explain your choice.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give students action word cards to sort by slow, fast, quiet, or loud movement, then act out each word.

  2. Ask students to revise “The girl said hello” with a stronger speaking word and explain how the meaning changes.

  3. Play Word Swap by showing a sentence and awarding points for replacements that fit the meaning and sound natural.

  4. Have students write a short weather report using precise words such as chilly, stormy, drizzle, or gusty. What does the weather sound and feel like?
