What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose words and phrases that express an exact meaning. They use synonyms, shades of meaning, context, and known vocabulary to improve speaking and writing.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students select words that clearly match their meaning, audience, and tone. They can explain why one synonym fits a sentence better than another.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose a familiar word even when it does not match the exact meaning or tone. They may treat synonyms as interchangeable in every context.

How to Assess It

Give students the sentence, “The dog went across the yard,” and ask them to replace “went” with a more precise verb. Have them explain their choice.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs synonym cards, such as stroll, march, and race, then have them sort each word by speed, mood, or purpose.

  2. Ask students to replace one vague word in a paragraph, then write two sentences explaining why their new word fits better.

  3. Play a word-choice challenge where teams select the best verb or adjective for a sentence and defend their answer.

  4. Compare wording in two product advertisements, then have students revise one vague claim using more specific and accurate language.
