What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose words and phrases that express an exact meaning when speaking and writing. They use known vocabulary and word relationships to replace vague, repeated, or poorly matched words.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students select words that match the exact action, feeling, or description they intend. They can revise a sentence by replacing a vague word and explain how the new word improves meaning.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat synonyms as interchangeable, even when their strength or tone differs. They may choose impressive words that do not fit the sentence or repeat vague words such as nice, good, and went.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: “Replace went in ‘The tired dog went home’ with a more precise verb. Explain why your word fits.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs word cards such as stroll, march, and sprint, then have students sort them by speed and act out each word.

  2. Ask students to revise “The nice animal went across the yard” and explain how each new word changes the picture.

  3. Play Vocabulary Swap: teams replace an underlined vague word with the best choice from three options and justify their answer.

  4. Have students rewrite a classroom direction, weather report, or lunch announcement using words that make the message clearer and more exact.
