What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose specific words and phrases that match their intended meaning. They use word relationships and familiar vocabulary to improve speaking and writing.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students select words that clearly match the action, feeling, or idea they want to express. They can explain why one word fits better than a similar word.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose a synonym without checking its tone or exact meaning. They may also use vague words, such as “nice” or “went,” when a more exact word fits.

How to Assess It

Give students the sentence, “The dog went across the yard.” Ask them to replace “went” with a precise verb and explain their choice.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs word cards such as walk, march, shuffle, and sprint, then have them sort the words by movement and intensity.

  2. Ask students to revise “The girl said she was upset” and explain how each new word changes the meaning.

  3. Play a synonym ladder game where students replace a vague word with increasingly precise choices and use each choice in a sentence.

  4. Study weather reports, menus, or product descriptions and circle words chosen to create a specific image or response.
