What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare similar verbs and explain how each one shows a different way of acting. They also rank related adjectives by strength, from less intense to more intense.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students select a verb that matches how an action happens, such as peeking through a keyhole or glaring when angry. They arrange related adjectives by strength and explain their order.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat similar verbs as interchangeable and miss differences in action, feeling, or duration. They may also assume that every adjective has a simple weakest-to-strongest order.
How to Assess It
- Give students the words peek, look, stare, big, large, and gigantic. Ask them to place each set in order and explain one choice.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs verb cards, then have students act out each word while classmates identify the action and explain the clues.
Ask students to describe how peek, stare, and glare differ, then write one sentence showing the meaning of each verb.
Play a word ladder game where teams arrange adjective cards from weakest to strongest and defend any disputed placement.
Examine weather reports and product ads, then compare words such as warm, hot, scorching, large, enormous, and gigantic.
