What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use print and digital glossaries or beginning dictionaries to find meanings of unfamiliar words and phrases. They choose the meaning that makes sense in the sentence or text.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students locate a word or phrase in a glossary or beginning dictionary without help. They select a meaning that fits the sentence and explain the meaning in their own words.

Common Misconceptions

Students may look for a word under its first sound instead of its first letter, or search using the wrong alphabetical order. They may copy the first definition without checking whether it makes sense in the sentence.

How to Assess It

Give students a short passage with one bold word and a print or digital dictionary. Ask them to find the word, write its meaning, and explain how that meaning fits the sentence.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a print glossary and word cards, then have them race to locate each word and record its meaning.

  2. Ask students, “How does the sentence help you choose the right dictionary meaning?” and have them explain one example in writing.

  3. Play Dictionary Detective by giving clues, such as first letter and guide words, for students to identify and define a hidden word.

  4. Use a classroom map, menu, or science page with unfamiliar words, then have students use a glossary or digital dictionary to clarify them.
