What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use dictionaries, glossaries, and thesauruses in print or online to verify words. They check spelling and select meanings or synonyms that fit the surrounding sentence.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students locate a word efficiently and confirm its spelling. They choose the definition or synonym that fits the sentence, then explain their choice using context.

Common Misconceptions

Students may select the first definition listed without checking the sentence context. They may also treat every thesaurus synonym as interchangeable or misspell a word while searching for it.

How to Assess It

Give students the sentence, “The current pulled the raft downstream.” Ask them to use a reference source to identify the matching meaning of “current” and correct “dowstream.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set up dictionary, glossary, and thesaurus stations where students correct spellings and select context-matched meanings for a prepared word list.

  2. Ask students to explain which meaning of “bank” fits two different sentences and name the reference source that helped.

  3. Play Reference Relay, with teams racing to find a word, record its correct spelling, and choose the best definition for a sentence.

  4. Have students use a menu, weather report, or game instructions to identify unfamiliar words and verify each meaning with a reference source.
