Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose the first dictionary definition without checking the sentence. They may treat synonyms as exact matches or read a figurative phrase literally.
How to Assess It
- Give the sentence, “We watched the bats fly from the cave at dusk.” Ask students to use a dictionary entry to explain which meaning of “bat” fits.

Give groups word cards to sort into synonyms, antonyms, and related categories, then check uncertain matches with a dictionary or thesaurus.
