What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students ask a clear question about a topic they want to understand. They use two or more sources, choose facts that answer the question, and share an accurate response.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student writes a focused question and finds useful details in at least two sources. The student answers in their own words, includes accurate facts, and names the sources used.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may rely on one source or copy whole sentences without checking meaning. They may collect interesting facts that do not answer their question or confuse opinions with facts.
How to Assess It
- Give students a book page and a short article about frogs. Ask them to write one question, one relevant fact from each source, and a one-sentence answer.

Ways to Teach It
Set up two source stations, a picture book and fact sheet, then have students record one fact from each on sticky notes.
Ask, "Which source best answered your question, and what detail helped?" Students discuss with a partner, then write two sentences.
Play Fact Match: teams match question cards to relevant fact cards, then explain why each chosen fact answers the question.
Research a school lunch item using its package label and a nutrition page, then create a mini poster answering one class question.
