What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students select a topic that interests them and ask questions they could investigate. They use question words such as who, what, when, where, why, and how.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose a topic they want to learn about and generate several clear questions. Their questions can guide a search in books, approved websites, videos, or interviews.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may write statements instead of questions or choose questions that need only a yes or no answer. They may also pick questions that are too broad, such as “What are animals?”
How to Assess It
- Show a picture of an unusual animal and ask students to write two research questions about it. Check that each question is clear, related to the topic, and answerable through research.

Ways to Teach It
Set out topic baskets with books and photos, then have students choose one basket and write three questions on sticky notes.
Ask students to complete the prompt, “I want to learn about ___ because ___,” then share two questions with a partner.
Play Question Sort by sorting cards into research questions, yes-or-no questions, and statements, then revise weak examples.
Use a school garden, pet, sport, or community job as a topic and list questions that could be answered using real sources.
