What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose a topic they care about and write questions to guide their research. As they gather information, they add questions that clear up confusion or explore new details.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student writes several clear questions that can be answered through research. After reading or listening to a source, the student asks a related question that narrows the topic or seeks more detail.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may write topic words or statements instead of questions. They may ask only yes-or-no questions, repeat the same idea, or add unrelated follow-up questions.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to choose a topic, write two research questions, and read a short source. They must add one follow-up question based on new information.

Ways to Teach It
Provide sticky notes and nonfiction books, then have students post three starting questions and add one follow-up after reading.
Ask students to write about a favorite topic, then share which question would help them learn something new.
Play Question Ladder, where pairs change one broad question into two focused questions that could guide a search.
Choose a local issue, such as playground litter, and write questions students could ask a custodian, principal, or community worker.
