What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students turn a broad area of interest into a focused question that can support extended research. They identify connected subtopics, write follow-up questions, and revise weak questions for greater depth and clarity.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can narrow a broad topic into a focused question that invites analysis, not a one-word answer. The student creates useful follow-up questions and explains how they connect to the main inquiry.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse a topic with a research question or write questions that require only one fact. They may list unrelated questions, use vague wording, or decide the answer before reviewing evidence.

How to Assess It

Give students the topic of school start times. Ask for one focused research question, two connected subquestions, and a sentence explaining each connection.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups sticky notes with broad, narrow, and factual questions to sort, revise, and arrange into a connected research web.

  2. Have students compare two questions about social media and explain in writing which one would support deeper research and why.

  3. Play Question Ladder: teams turn a broad topic into increasingly focused questions, earning points for clarity, depth, and connection.

  4. Choose a local issue, such as traffic near school, and write questions for residents, officials, and students that examine different viewpoints.
