What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students turn a broad topic into focused questions that can guide research. They develop related questions that help them examine connections and investigate a complex idea.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can write an open-ended question that is focused enough to research with several sources. The student can add connected questions and explain how each one supports the investigation.

Common Misconceptions

Students may write yes-or-no questions, single-fact questions, or questions too broad to investigate. They may list unrelated questions or disguise an opinion as a question.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Choose the topic "school lunches" and write one focused research question plus two related questions that would guide your investigation.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Create a question web with sticky notes, placing a broad topic in the center and grouping connected research questions around it.

  2. Discuss this prompt: How does changing one word, such as why or how, make a research question stronger?

  3. Play Question Sort by classifying cards as factual, yes-or-no, broad, or researchable, then revise the weak questions.

  4. Choose a school issue, such as lunch waste or hallway traffic, and write connected questions that could guide a real investigation.
