What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students turn a broad or complex topic into useful questions that guide investigation. They use those questions to connect issues, consider possible solutions, and refine the focus of a project or draft.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can turn a broad topic into a focused, open-ended question with a clear purpose. The student can explain links among related issues and revise the question when sources reveal a better direction.

Common Misconceptions

Students often write questions that are too broad, factual, or easily answered with one source. They may treat related topics as identical or choose a solution before examining evidence. Some narrow the topic so far that there is little left to investigate.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Start with “social media and teenagers.” Write one focused, open-ended research question and explain how answering it could lead to a solution or new understanding.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Have students build a sticky-note concept map linking school lunch waste to cost, health, policy, and possible solutions.

  2. Ask students to write three questions about artificial intelligence in schools, then explain which question would support the strongest research.

  3. Play Question Funnel: teams revise a broad topic card through three rounds until it names a group, issue, and research purpose.

  4. Use a city council agenda item and have students frame a focused question that could guide a public recommendation.
